Partial characterization of the secretions of the skin and paratoid glands of the Philippine toad Bufo biporcatus philippinicus Inger was conducted. Description of the crude extract and subjecting it to Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) showed that the light brown to cream thin secretions contains biogenic amines most likely to be indolealkylamines. Solvent fractionation of the ethonolic extract of the skin and paratoid glands of 165 individuals using diethyl ether and ethyl acetate yielded three fractions. Thin Layer Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Infrared Analysis of the samples resulted in the identification of the presence of bufodienolides in the secretions. Results suggest that the major bufodieonolides identified are bufalin, gammabufotalin and resibufegenin. However, further characterizations of the compounds in the secretion are still needed.
