Brown spot caused by Helminthosporium oryzae is considered to be responsible for significant qualitative and quantitative damages in rice. However, the severity of brown spot disease can be managed through development of resistant lines. The present study was aimed to scrutinize existing rice germplasm against brown spot. For this purpose, 96 rice genotypes included in different yield trials and international nursery were assessed for disease resistance under natural field conditions at Nuclear Institute for Agriculture (NIA), Tandojam, Pakistan. The disease severity ratings were taken according to Standard Evaluation System. The studies revealed that rice genotypes were markedly differed in their resistance to brown spot. Among the tested rice lines/varieties, one was rated as highly resistant, fifteen resistant, twenty two moderately resistant, twenty six moderately susceptible, fourteen susceptible and eighteen lines/varieties displayed highly susceptible response. Hence, it was suggested that resistant genotypes evaluated from these studies can be deployed in the future breeding strategies to evolve the resistant varieties against brown spot of rice.
