This thesis analyzes the factors that have contributed to the higher price volatility and the increases in commodity prices, particularly the prices for agricultural commodities, over the 2002-2008 period, and the impact of the financial crisis on the world commodity market. The growth in world commodity prices was caused by various fundamental and macroeconomic factors that led to increases in global demand and constraints in global supply, paralleled by the increased number of financial investors. There is no convincing evidence of the extent to which financialization has contributed to the growth in commodity prices
