Crithmum maritimum is a halophyte that is traditionally used in the Mediterranean diet and it grows wildly on the rock cliffs and sandy beaches near the sea. This plant has a well-established ethno-pharmacological application in the traditional medicine that is increasingly accepted by scientists. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of the essential oils in the Cretan wild and cultivated plants and to confirm the antioxidant potential through multiple assays. The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation were subjected to chromatography - mass spectroscopy analyses and the main constituents were revealed. The antioxidant properties of the plant were evaluated through in vitro and in vivo characterization. The part of the in vitro studies consisted of three chemical assays for radical scavenging properties. The in vivo study consisted of the Ethyl Acetate fraction determination of the antioxidant activity, using yeast cells harboring defects in their antioxidant system (regarding the growth recovery from H2O2 insult). The antioxidant effect of the extract was seen in the wild-type and the mutant strains deltacta1, deltaoye2glr1, while in the deltasod1 mutant strain a prooxidant effect was observed.
