Fisheries co-management in Asia: phase 1 project report

In 1994, the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) in Manila, Philippines and the Institute for Fisheries Management (IFM) at the North Sea Centre in Hirtshals, Denmark, in collaboration with national research partners (NARS) in several Asian (Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh) and African (Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa, Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal) countries, initiated the five-year Fisheries Co-management research project. The purpose of this research report is to present a synthesis of the findings from the various research activities of the project in Asia. More specifically, and as stated in the project proposal, "The final product of the research will be the determination of prospects for and identification of principles and conditions of successful implementation of fisheries co-management as a sustainable, equitable and efficient management strategy." This rese6rch report will only report on the results of the project research activities in Asia. A separate research report will be prepared on the research results from Africa.
