Measurement of leaf area index (LAI) using a canopy analyzer is one of the methods of assessing the performance of plants by estimating its leaf area on different light intensities. Green Super Rice (GSR) are inbred rice lines that are nutrient-efficient and maintain relatively higher grain yields under different stress conditions. The aim of this study was to compare the plant height, tiller count and grain yield performance of GSR lines to the popular NCT checks and its relationships to LAI under different stress conditions. Two different sets comprising of 250 introgression lines derived in the recipient genetic background of Huanghuazhan, a well adapted GSR variety in China were used for this study. The LAI of selected sets of elite GSR lines were measured during the wet season of 2014 at different conditions irrigated, low input, rainfed and saline. This was done by using a canopy analyzer (LiCor) between 8 am to 4 pm or when the light intensity was at its highest at three intervals, 6, 4 and 2 weeks to harvesting. At the end of the season, LAI was correlated with the total grain yield and the top 10 lines based on LAI were identified. It was observed that LAI ranging from 0.19 to 7.31 is increasing with higher yield, taller plants (47.1 to 200 cm) and greater tiller number (15 to 30). The saline and low input condition yielded the lowest LAI of 0.19 and 0.33, with a few HHZ introgression lines has a higher LAI of 2.985 than the national check (2.311) and both recurrent and donor parents (2.275). The top performers observed were GSR IR1-DQ135-L13-Y1 and GSR IR1-DQ142-R3-Y1. The data suggests that LAI can be used as a predictor in determining the performance of GSR lines and is comparable with other parameters.
