The domestic cat (<i>Felis silvestris catus</i>) is a popular pet in many societies; however, the attitudes of people towards cats vary greatly among stakeholders. Today, cats fill roles as companions, competitors, hunters of small prey, and in some communities, perceived as a nuisance. There are both societal and individual differences regarding the exclusive confinement of cats indoors. The majority of cat owners in the USA confine their pet cats exclusively indoors, while the majority of cat owners in the UK allow their pet cats free access to the outdoors. The aim of this paper is to review the advantages and disadvantages of confining cats indoors for the primary stakeholders involved - the cats, their owners, the public and wildlife.
