The paper is based on the cartographic sources of Riga City and the suburban area from the 17th century and the early 18th century that are available in the archives and museums of Riga and Stockholm. The cartographic images are viewed in the context of the environmental conditions and place names in Riga City and its environs, focusing on the sand and sand-hills.
