This article presents the role of FPRDI's [Forest Products Research and Development Institute] wood identification service in archaeology. For three decades now, wooden artifacts from various local and foreign sites have been submitted to the Institute for identification. The method of identification follows the standard macro-micro technique used by FPRDI wood anatomist. Result of the identification are intended to assist archaeologist in explaining why our ancestors opted to make use of particular species from the diverse plant resources available to them. In general, the identified artifacts combined with information from relevant literature and client's field notes suggest that our ancestors were knowledgeable in gathering from their environment specific plants that would satisfy their basic needs.
