Varietal response of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) against southern blight disease and its management

Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the most important crops of the world. They are low in calories but exceptionally rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants. It suffers from, several diseases but among them Southern blight is the most destructive disease caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. "Southern wilt" and "Southern stem rot" are other well-known names of Southern blight. As an aim of this study, screening and management of this disease is envisaged by chemicals and plant extracts. Ten varieties of bell pepper germplasm (SP-042, TSP-041, Freedom F1, SP-041, Asha, Super Globe F1, Extra 2, Savio F1, Corral F1 and Alena F1.) were collected from Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad. Among ten varieties, two varieties TSP-041 and Corral F1 shows resistant response, three varieties Freedom F1, Super Globe F1, and SP-042 shows moderately resistant response. Two varieties Extra 2 and Asha exhibit moderately susceptible response, while three varieties SP-041, Alena F1 and Savio F1 exhibit susceptible response against the pathogen. Among four chemicals (Systhane, Matalaxyl + Mancozeb, Cymoxanil + Mancozeb and Rescue) were evaluated against southern blight disease. Systhane gave maximum disease reduction (4.30%) at 3rd concentration. While Rescue showed minimum disease reduction (24.20%). Among four plants extracts (Neem, Amaltas, Onion and Garlic). Neem gave maximum disease reduction (40.27%) while minimum disease reduction was given by onion (49.20%).
