Studies in the feed conversion ratio and specific growth rate o9f tilapia as affected by different probiotics

Probiotics are known as life promoter and they perform their activity in natural ways to enhance life of an organism which feed upon them. Probiotics enhanced growth, prevent intestinal diseases and trigger pre-digestion of anti-nutritional factors. Pro biotic perform their actions in multiple ways such as they inhibit the activity of pathogens by the production of antagonistic compounds that compete with sites where pathogens attached and also compete for nutrients and increase absorption of nutrients. The supplementation offish feed with Saccharomyces cerevisiae as probiotic 1%, 2% and control enhanced the growth performance of sex reversal tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in terms of wet weight, fork and total length increments. The third group that was control fed with necessary diet showed total length and fork length and weight increments lower when compared with fish fed with probiotic feeds. The physical and chemical values of the experimental ponds monitored and recorded on fortnightly basis. The specific growth performance, feed conversion ratio and condition factor of fish varied significantly among three treatments. The result showed that the 2% treatment showed better performance in terms of weight that was 55 plus minus 0.52g followed 1% treatment (46.68 plus minus 0.53g) and control (38.78 plus minus 0.36g).
