Pedunculate oak diaback is the common phenomenon in Europe. There is increasing number of studies in Serbia and the region that deal with this issue. One of the causes of oak dieback in Serbia which was indicated was building of Sava river embankment for protection against flooding from surface waters. The aim of this study was to use of the state-of-the-art dendroecological methods for examination of impact of the embankment on the growth of two stands in Srem. One stand from flooded area (strict nature reserve "Old Vratična") and the other from the protected part (locality Smogva). The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference in the growth of two stands in two periods, 1882-1932 (period before embankment establishment) and from 1932 to 1982 (period after the establishment of embankment). Although the flooding regime was significantly altered with the construction of protective embankment, the vitality of forests in Smogvi not changed in the years thereafter. This fact suggests that groundwater regime that was present at least in the part of the Srem forest basin in the investigated period was not significantly altered by the embankment
