The aim of this research is to determine economic characteristics of electricity production in biogas plants, as well as an analysis of the economic viability of an investment in the construction of biogas plants. The paper includes: the calculation of total costs and revenue of the production, the calculation of cost per kilo, as well as the analysis of the net present value, payback period and internal rate of return for the given investment. The category of total costs includes: cost of materials, cost of maintenance, depreciation and cost of salaries. From the aspect of revenue, calculations are completed for: income from the sale of generated electricity, income from the sale of thermal energy and income from bio-fertilizer production. According to the calculation, the cost of electricity production in biogas plant is 0.077 €/kWh, which is significantly lower than the sales price, which by the feed-in tariff is 0.141 €/kWh, which together with the accrued gross margin of 35.14% indicates economic profitability of this production. The inclusion of financial costs in the calculation has a significant negative impact on the previously reported value.
