Six Sigma concept is presented in literature as a technique and a philosophy stemming from the desire to eliminate waste and improve performances as much as technically possible. The idea of Six Sigma is to reduce the number of defects to the lowest possible level, to reduce costs and production time, and to increase productivity and improve business results. The goal of the Six Sigma principles is to achieve "perfection" with no more than 3.4 defects, errors or omissions per million opportunities. Therefore, this paper provides a brief description of statistical groundings underlying the Six Sigma methodology.
