Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, is native to the southwestern parts of North America. It spread to Europe after the World War I. Potato beetle was fi rst recorded in Serbia in 1955, after World War II. Since that time, this serious pest has been feeding exclusively on solanaceous crops and weeds, causing economically significant damage to potato, eggplant, tomato, tobacco, pepper and similar plants. Nowadays, it is impossible to grow potato without controlling this pest species, which raises the cost of production. Bearing in mind that it has been present in Serbia for 60 years, many facts about its biology, development and control measures are well-known. However, due to its great importance to potato production, the distribution, morphology and biology of Colorado potato beetle are discussed in the paper, together with its pest habits and possible measurements for an effective control.
