The effective launch of trials on smallholdings was delayed by a year due to a lack of available funds, a problem which now seems to have been solved. The young coconut palms in the 5 replanting trials have completely stagnated for a year, due to a lack of fertilizers but especially because of the poor planting method (plant taken out of the nursery bag, severed roots). A timetable for operations and observations is proposed for 2000 and 2001. For the shoreline trials, Acacia mangium will have to be planted next to Cassia siamea in treatment C. The old coconut palms in the 8 rehabilitation trials were fertilized and leaf samples were taken in June. Mineral nutrition at the beginning of these trials was highly variable from one trial to the next, and a potassium deficiency is usually dominant. A timetable of operations and observations is proposed. For the agronomy experimentation aspects of the coconut project, a room needs to be equipped for leaf sample preparation. Two main purchases are recommended: an oven and field balance. For development aspects, it seems essential to supply growers with coconut seedlings that comply with standards, so as to guarantee good striking in the field. As the budget is fixed and cannot be modified, it would seem appropriate to lower the number of seedlings to be supplied and hire trucks with the money saved to transport plants upright in their nursery bags.
