Vegetative Growth and Fruit Characteristics of Introduced Olive(Olea europaea L.) Varieties Cultivated in Jeju Island, Korea

The study was conducted to investigate the possibility of olive cultivation in Jeju island, Korea. We evaluated vegetative growth and fruit quality of five introduced cultivars. We have measured results of daily average, maximum and minimum temperature in olive cultivation field. The lowest temperature in winter was from -5℃ to -6℃, and olive vegetative growth was normalized with the change of temperature during the year. Inflorescence buds started to swell(BBCH 51) was 3rd to 15th April, flowering(BBCH 61) started from 20th to 30th May, fruit colouring( BBCH 81) started from 5th October to 5th November, harvest maturity was from 10th to 30th November. 'Koroneiki' and 'Maurino' cultivars were weak during vegetative growth and had a lot of shoots. 'Frantoio', 'Leccino', 'Verdale' cultivars were stronger during vegetative growth compared to other cultivars. The fruit weight of 'Koroneiki' was the lowest at 0.9g and the other cultivars were from 2.4 g to 2.6 g. There was no significant difference in the oil content of the dried fruit among the varieties, and oil content was ranged from 40.9% DW to 43.7% DW. The yields of all cultivars were ranged from 5,290 g/tree to 5,820 g/tree five years after. According to the results of this study, five olive varieties introduced in Jeju island were normally grown and fruits were harvested at the lowest temperature in winter. Therefore, we recommend that it is possible to cultivate olive tree in Jeju island, Korea.
