Community development programs and social charges in the Kamoro indigenous community of Mimika Regency, Papua, Indonesia

This study aimed to determine the relationship between community development programs and social change among the Kamoro indigenous community of Mimika Regency, Papua, Indonesia. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) describe the bio-physical and social environment of the Kamoro indigenous community; (2) describe the socio-demographic and economic characteristics of the respondents; (3) explain the community development programs implemented in the Kamoro community; (4) analyze the social changes resulting from the community development programs; (5) recommend a community development model appropriate for the Kamoro indigenous in Mimika, Papua, Indonesia. Data gathering was done using the triangulation method. The methods include personal interview of 144 household respondents, observation, review of documents, key informant interviews and focus group discussions. Qualitative analysis using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, means and range was employed. Results of the study revealed that the implemented CD program for the economic sector supported the Kamoro community only for the short time. In the long run, the Kamoro people went back to their traditional way of income and livelihood fulfillment which is gathering natural resources from nature. In the education sector, the CD program has enabled the Kamoro people to attain higher level of education and heightened the people's awareness on the importance of education. In the health sector, the community development programs contributed to the awareness of the community about the importance of health care, although the change occurred slowly. Considering these outcomes of the CD programs, a community development model for the Kamoro people is recommended.
