Technology promotion of LES open pollinated white corn varieties cum seed production project in Region 02 [Cagayan Valley, Philippines]

Rapid population growth significantly increases the demand for rice. One of the measures to attain food security is the promotion and utilization of alternative crops as staple food. Thus white corn has been identified as one of the promising or potential commodity in support to food security. In fact, about 20% of the total population is still dependent on white corn as staple food. The white corn producing municipalities in Cagayan which includes the municipalities of Piat, Solana, Amulung, Tuguegarao, Iguig and Enrile, whereas in the Northern part of Isabela includes the municipalities of Sta. Maria, Cabayan, San Pablo, Tumawini and Sto. Tomas. To efficiently disseminate the newly developed improved varieties. Technology Demonstration were conducted in the white corn growing municipalities in Cagayan Valley. The project was able to extend seed subsidy in support to corn rehab as affected by natural calamities such as flood and drought. In addition, the promoted improved white corn varieties provides additional net income of P18,640.50 and P18, 528.75 for Cagayan and Isabela respectively and like wise adaptable to growing domains in Cagayan Valley and socially accepted due to its high yield potentials and good eating quality. Furthermore, the project produced and distributed about 239,467 kilograms of certified seeds in Region 02 [Cagayan Valley] as well as other regions which served 10,346 hectare and generated cash sales amounting to P4,437,450 (C.Y. 2014-2016). Moreover continuous promotion and commercialization of the newly developed improved varieties coupled with value-adding should be undertaken in order to enhance and encourage other farmers to venture on white corn production business.
