Participation in Farmer-Scientists Training Program and adoption of corn-based technologies in Bondoc Peninsula, Quezon Province, Philippines
2017

Farmer-Scientists Training Program (FSTP) uses a research, development and extension methodology in increasing corn production and overall farm income by conducting participatory trainings, on-farm experimental trials and promoting farmer-to-farmer extension. To analyze the relationship between participation and adoption of FSTP-recommended technologies/practices, the study was conducted in 6 sites in Bondoc Peninsula [Philippines] with 66 randomly selected respondents. The sites were purposively chosen due to its accessibility and sufficient number of respondents present for statistical analysis. The study used survey interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), key informant interviews (KII), and actual observations in data gathering. Measures of central tendency and variability, correlation and regression analyses were used for data analysis. Results showed that respondents' participation in terms of attendance and role performance is between medium to high. Also, respondents' motivation to participate in the training is a sum of their effort, performance and perceived rewards. Most of the respondents are partial and early adopters. Bio-physical, socio-demographic and economic factors were found to be positively correlated with the adoption of technologies/practices except for total income. Further, the adoption of technologies/practices is affected by the level of participation in the training. Logistic regression analysis also showed positive relationships in participation and probability of adoption. An increase in the corn yield per hectare and farm and total income were also observed as benefits of adoption of technologies/practices recommended by the training. It is recommended that FSTP must be implemented from Phase 1 to Phase 3 to ensure adoption and development of skills as farmer-scientists and farmer-scientist teachers.
