Grass-legume mixtures are of great importance in the production of high quality forage, both in terms of the farm holding, as well as free range livestock. Cultivation of italian ryegrass in mixture with red clover achieved significantly higher yield of green forage and hay, in relation to the pure crop of red clover. Quality seed is the key to successful production of animal feed and increase of forage yield is directly proportional to the quality of the seed that is being sown. This paper analyzes the most important indicators of seed quality (germination, dormancy, dead seed and seedling vigor) in six different cultivars of diploid red clover (K-17, K-30, Nike, Una, Petnica i Sana) and three different cultivars of diploid italian ryegrass (K-13, Aubade i Draga). The results showed a significant differences in germination and seedling vigor of tested cultivars, as red clover and italian ryegrass.
