Soil quality, health and biogeny depend on the number, activity and diversity of microorganisms. With regard to the prevalence of certain groups of microorganisms and the activity of oxidoreductive enzyme dehydrogenase, this study aims to determine soil biogeny and soil sanitary characteristics at eight localities situated in park areas, near crossroads and high-density roads in Novi Sad. High soil biogeny of the tested agricultural soils was represented by a large number of the studied groups of microorganisms, as well as a high level of dehydrogenase (DHA) activity. Non-agricultural soils exhibited lower levels of hydrogenase activity, and coliforms were found in tens of thousands of colonies per 1 gram absolutely dry soil. The detection of fecal coliforms in soil indicates a potential soil sanitary problem with a negative health effect on people, especially children.
