The paper deals with the changes in the number of tracheids per mm2 in bald cypress trunks on two different alluvial sites – Veliko Ratno Ostrvo and Bačka Palanka. The six trunks selected in each site meet the following criteria: good health and physiological state, seed origin, satisfactory strength properties. The trunks also had representative spatial distribution, i.e. borderline trees and dense canopy trees were not included in the study. The selected trees were then felled and they had cross-sections (discs) taken at the stem base (0.3 m) and at the breast height (1.3 m). The discs were used to make the so-called `tubes` which in turn served to make permanent slides of sections under laboratory conditions. These permanent slides included all growth rings from the pith to the bark. The density of tracheids was determined in 3 visible fields within each zone (a total of 6 fields within each growth ring). The numerical method was used to determine the density of tracheids included in each visible field. This method of sectioning wood in six visible fields minimizes the probability of error because the majority of tracheids are covered. The variations in the tracheid density were studied in relation to the following 3 factors: the cambial age, the trunk height and the zone inside growth rings. Based on the obtained results on the changes in the number of tracheids per mm2 , it can be concluded that the cambial age and the zone inside growth rings are the most responsible for the fluctuations in the number of tracheids, while the trunk height has the least significant influence.
