The collection and research of biological material of farm animal genetic resources, including the Latvian Warmblood horses, were started in 2008 at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies. Biological material of 162 Latvian Warmblood breed horses has been collected until December 31, 2018, of which 147 animals met the requirements of Latvian Heavy Warmblood (LHWB) horses. As the primary task of the genebank is to participate in preservation of local endangered breeds, the study only examines data on LHWB horses. The horses included in the genebank represent 12 LHWB sire lines. Lines of Gaidis Lb574 (22 animals), Spekonis Lsb100 (16), Flagmanis Lb703 (15), Ammon Old7 (12) and Günter 308H (12) are more widely represented. More than two-thirds of horses included in the genebank are mares (107 animals). By the end of 2018, 55 of them have died or been exported, 26 of them are in active reproductive age (up to 20 years) and 25 are over 20 years old. Biological material of 32 stallions is stored in the genebank, 21 stallions are certified for use in breeding, but more than a half of them (11 animals) have died or been exported by the end of 2018. Other 10 breeding stallions are between 11 and 18 years old. The conformation values show that the population of LHWB is best represented by horses belonging to Spekonis Lsb100 line, while measurements – horses belonging to Ammon Old7, Flagmanis Lb704 and Gaidis Lb576 lines.
