In the frame of the project “Examination of perspective berry cultivars for integrated cultivation in different climatic regions of Latvia, as well as development and improvement of cultivation technologies”, Institute of Horticulture (LatHort) conducted the evaluation of cultivars for different berry crops, including red and white currants, to evaluate their adaptability for growing in environmentally friendly cultivation systems. Investigations were performed in two places of the institute, Pūre and Dobele, and in the farm. During 2015–2019 eight red and white currant cultivars were evaluated in Pūre, ten cultivars were evaluated in Dobele and 5 cultivars – in the farm in Saldus region. According to the obtained results, red currant cultivars ‘Asja’, ‘Ņiva’, and ‘Marmeladņica’ and white currant ‘Bajana’ were selected as the most suitable for integrated cultivation in Latvia. These cultivars were characterised by good productivity, fruit quality, winter hardiness and resistance to pests and diseases. Good productivity and fruit quality were observed also in the late ripening time cultivars ‘Orlovskaja Zvezda‘ and ‘Osipovskaja’, which had less damage during spring frosts, however, they were susceptible to leaf spots and aphids. Therefore more attention should be paid to plant protection.
