In this paper are presented the results of a study of the effect of corn silageparticle size on the fractions distribution and intake of Total Mixed Ration (TMR) forcows in the late lactation (> 150 DIM). The Penn State Particle Separator (PSPS) wasused for the determination of physical form and average particle size of corn silage,TMR and orts. It was found that different average particle size of corn silages had asignificant effect on the physical form and fractions distribution of TMR as well as oforts, and affected sorting activity of cows. Using the corn silage that wascharacterized with the smaller average particle size (7.83 mm) in the TMR for dairycows had a positive effect in reducing the selective consumption compared to silagewith larger average particle size (8.64 mm). By analysis the physical form of the orts,it was determined an 8% (p < 0.05) higher ratio of the longest particles (> 19mm) atcows fed TMR included the corn silage with the larger average particle size, indicating the significant sorting against this fraction. By providing the adequatephysical form of the forages, during their preparation, it is possible to achieve theoptimal ratio of the particle fractions in the total mixed ration and the more evenlyintake of diet.
