Trends in supply and demand development of protein crops on Slovak agri-food market, in the EU and world

Expectations of trade liberalisation effects on agri-food sector were optimistic for our agri-food market after Slovakia´s EU-Accession. However, it showed that just pressure of surrounding competitive environment had negatively affected market development of some commodities. After the year 2004 cultivated area of several crops in Slovakia grown on arable land declined despite of suitable natural, soil and climate conditions for their cultivation. Among these crops belong also grain legumes which cultivated area in the year 2017 declined by 14.5 % compared to the year 2004 in Slovakia. The article deals with assessment of grain legumes agri-food market factors development in Slovakia and current situation of protein crops in the EU and world. It provides cultivated area development overview of grain legumes, production, cultivation structure, total resources for domestic use, domestic consumption, export and producer prices. Market situation we assess against the background of several time periods that are significant for legumes from our point of view.
