Cooperatives, one of the important tools helping rural development, increasing producers' yields and incomes that have scarce resources, and making sustainable agricultural development, are used effectively in developed countries and emerging countries. Due to their disadvantageous structure, small-scale producers face many difficulties in adapting to contemporary agricultural markets. However, cooperatives emerge as institutional structures that help producers to cope with these challenges. The modern cooperative system in our country, whose origin dates back to 1863, has been prominent in the Republican Era with the legal arrangements made under the leadership of Atatürk, and maintains its importance with the state support and guidance given during the planned development period. Nevertheless, agricultural cooperatives of our country, which are facing a number of structural problems, have not reached the desired level today. This study aims to contribute to the development of our country's cooperatives by revealing the historical development and structure of cooperatives, comparing the current situation and examining the role of cooperatives in the agricultural economy of the world and Turkey.
