Combining study approaches and farmer experiences to better preserve and utilise grasslands with native flora. Combiner les approches et les expériences pour mieux préserver et utiliser les prairies à flore naturelle

Magnanon, S. | Vertès, Francoise
The decline of grasslands in agricultural production systems and natural landscapes has long worried the scientific community; it is of increasing concern to spatial planners. A growing number of livestock farmers (and industry stakeholders) are dealing with difficult economic conditions and/or wish to improve the state of the natural environment while also drawing value from it. They are simultaneously supplying and demanding knowledge about grasslands. Using two case studies (from the co-authors' theses), this article explores changes in ecological approaches by combining phytosociological descriptions of grassland vegetation, an understanding of its ecological and agronomic functions, and the potential utility of knowledge developed through work with livestock farmers. Pools of knowledge are finally being combined to establish a better balance between agricultural concerns, environmental concerns, production levels, and the preservation of biodiversity.
