Oil palm improvement through intercrossing of Elaeis oleifera, interspecific hybridization and backcrossing

Elaeis oleifera stands out against E. guineensis for traits such as oil quality and carotene. Being slightly different botanically, breeding programmes involving E. oleifera need to put less emphasis on the usual traits emphasized for E. guineensis viz. FFB and oil yield. Hence, oil palm improvement programme of E. oleifera may involve intercrossing, interspecific hybridization and backcrossing. However, these programmes also gave mixed results. Improvement of FFB yield due to increase in number of fruit bunches was achieved by intercrossing the oleiferas and interspecific hybridization with E. guineensis. Backcrossing to E. guineensis on the other hand resulted in a decline in the FFB yield due to decline in number of fruit bunches. Nevertheless, intercrossing, interspecific hybridization and backcrossing did not give much influence upon the average bunch weight. For bunch quality traits, the vigour for mean fruit weight, mesocarp to fruit, oil to dry mesocarp and oil to bunch increased via interspecific hybridization and backcrossing.
