Performance of different densities of cempedak in integration with rubber

Two cempedak clones, CH29 and CH30 were planted with densities of 66, 88 and 200 trees per ha between hedgerows of RRIM 901 rubber in an approach to integrate perennials to increase land productivity and income. A control plot of rubber planted in the conventional planting pattern was also set up. The growth rates (stem girthing, canopy size) latex and fruit yields and incidence of diseases of both crops were monitored for the initial period of 6 years after field establishment. There was no significant differences between the various cempedak densities on the growth of rubber, yield of the fruit crop, earliness of fruiting, percentage of fruiting trees, number and weight of fruits per tree. With the highest density of cempedak canopy closure occurred earlier where in the fifth year less than 5% light was transmitted to the ground. Rubber was open-tapped 5.5 years after establishment with no depression in yields observed between the treatments. Integration of the perennials did not increase infection of root disease.
