Genetic improvement studies of Acacias in Pakistan: an overview
1998
Rehman, Shams-ur
Genetic improvement studies undertaken during the last 10 years on several species of Acacia revealed the importance of two varieties of Acacia nilotica to the farmers viz.. Acacia nilotica var. cupressiformis as timber/pole and A. nilotica var. nilotica as firewood and fodder. The seed collected from mother trees of the first variety and grown in the field segregated 50:50 to cupressiformis vs. non-cupressiformis forms indicating that the variety does not breed true. A seed source from India was found best in provenance studies. Establishment of conservation stands for a few Acacia species is also suggested. Some Acacias were found to grow better under saline conditions. A few exotic Acacias e.g. A. cynophylla and A. ampliceps were also found suitable for amenity purposes in Pakistan. There is a need for work on conservation, vegetative propagation, frost tolerance and fodder quality among species to be initiated improvement.
