A potential formulation containing crude Piper nigrum extract as a functional agent

The genus Piper is reputed for their medicinal properties. It has been found to be cytotoxic toward leukaemia cells and has also been used to treat stomach ailments, as an insect repellant, a stimulant to induce the secretion of bile and a rubefacient. The bioactive compounds found in various species of Piper are alkaloids/amides, phenols, lignans, neolignans, terpenes, steroids, chalcones and flavanones. In this study, three crude extracts from Piper nigrum (Piperaceae) roots and the essential oil from the pepper berries were screened for toxic activities against the larvae of Aedes aegypti. The extracts indicated significant activities comparable to those reported for the well known insecticidal plant Azadirachta indica. The hexane extract gave a very low LC50 value of 0.45 µg mɭ¹ while the chloroform extract gave an even lower LC50 value of 0.37 µg mɭ¹. The methanol extract however, gave a slightly higher LC50 value of 1.6 µg mɭ¹. These remarkable activities shown by the extracts of Piper nigrum could be turned into useful products. These extracts, if combined with the right adjuvants could be formulated into a bioinsecticide or antiseptic creams.
