Failure of bonded natural rubber cylinders in tension
1993
Pond, T. J.
This study describes modes of failure which may occur in bonded rubber blocks in tension. Aspects of cavitation failure and interfacial bond strength are discussed in vulcanisates containing different carbon loadings. The relationship between cavitation and bond failure on the ultimate failure stress is examined. Results indicate that the mechanism responsible for ultimate failure tends to change from one of debonding to cavitation as the carbon content is increased. The conditions required to initiate surface crack propagation and the effect of such cracks on breaking stress are also described.
