Carboxymethylated kenaf core (CMKC) was prepared in a completely heterogeneous procedure in isopropanol solution that has been activated with aqueous sodium hydroxide (25%-40% w/v) and sodium minochloroacetate (SMCA) was used as the etherfying agent. The extent of carboxymethylation reaction was studied with respect to the degree of substitutions (DS) of the carboxymethylcellulose, reaction efficiency(RE) and weight percent gain (WPG) at different reaction times: 1, 2 and 3 hrs at 55 omnicron C reaction temperature. The reaction with 30% concentration of sodium hydroxide at 55% omnicron C was found to be the most optimum after 2 hours which leads to DS of 0.87 for CMKC (free lignin). The FTIR spectrum of CMKC showed the typical absorptions of the cellulose backbone as well as peaks at about 1610-1420 cm-1 indicating the presence of the carboxymethyl ether group attach on the molecular chain of cellulose.
