The essential oils of saveral parts of Michelia alba, namely, petal, young shoot and stem have been investigated for their chemical composition. Samples were extracted using Simultaneous Distillation Extraction (SDE) and the essential oils abtained were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Approximately 68 compounds were identified in essential oils obtained from petal, young shoot and stem of M. alba. The volatile compounds present in essential oils of petal, young shoot and stem varied from each other as well as their percentage. The major compounds identified were linalool (1,6-octadien-3-ol), cyclohexanol (dihydrocarveol), cyclohexane (1-ethenyl-1-methy-2, 4-bis (1-methyl-ethanol) and butanoic acid, 2-methyl-methyl ester. Linalool was the major compound detected in petal and stem i.e 59% and 32% respectively, whilst the major compound detected in young shoot was cyclohexanol (dihydrocarveol) (45%) and cyclohexane (12%). Linalool was only detected in petal and stem, whereas dihydrocarveol was only present in young shoot. In this study, most of the compounds detected in petal, young shoot and stem of M. alba were belonged to the group of isoprenoids, benzenoid, fatty acid and furan derivatives and miscellaneous volatile compounds.
