This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of milk and some chemical traits such as protein, dry matter, fat, lactose, water and total crude ash matter in milk in Akkaraman crossbred ewes maintained at village conditions. Totally, 120 Akkaraman crossbred ewes with ages of 2-6 years were used as animal material. Sixty sheep were used to determine some chemical properties in the milk. Milking in Akkaraman ewes started at forty days after parturition. Controls of the milking were made at 14 days intervals. The lactation milk production and the lactation period for each ewe were calculated according to data of controls based on test-day records and Sweden method. The means of the lactation milk yield and the lactation period of Akkaraman crossbred ewes were 96.41 l and 198.76 days, respectively. In the beginning (May), the middle (July) and, the end (August) of lactation period, it was determined that means of protein, dry matter, milk fat, lactose, water ratio and, total crude ash matter were 6.531 mg/l, 16.717 mg/l, 3.421 mg/l, 4.618 mg/l, 83.283 mg/l ve 1.239 mg/l for May; 5.308 mg/l, 16.406 mg/l, 5.022 mg/l, 4.479 mg/l, 83.594 mg/l ve 0.923 mg/l for July; 3.654 mg/l, 21.696 mg/l, 7.759 mg/l, 4.216 mg/l, 78.304 mg/l ve 1.034 mg/l for August, respectively. As a result, the findings suggested that the lactation milk yield and the lactation period of Akkaraman crossbred ewes were sufficient level for rural conditions.
