The changes in the amount of arsenic and selenium in sunflower crude oils by different irrigation levels

In this study, sunflower (Sunflower) plants grown in clay loam textured soil that sodium selenite (Na2SeO ) and the sodium arsenate heptahydrate (Na2HAsO4.7H2O) was applied. The changes of arsenic and selenium levels in seed crude oil extracted from these plants according to different irrigation levels were investigated. When about 50±10 % of available moisture was consumed; irrigation treatments were applied as follows: S1 :100% (to increase the level of the field capacity moisture content of the soil) and S2 : 90% S1, S3 : 80% S1 and S4: 70% S1. Sunflower seed yields in relation to irrigation levels were changed between 52.11 and 62.61 g plant-1 . The lowest yield was in treatment S4 in which the highest of water scarcity, but differences were statistically significant (p<0.05). The highest and the lowest crude oil contents of non-crusted seeds were obtained for S1 (60.65%) and S4 (58.98%) treatment. Arsenic and Se concentration for crude oils thoughout irrigation levels varied from 1.08 to 1.26 mg kg-1 and 0.85 to 0.99 mg kg-1 intervals, respectively. The differences between treatments for both elements were statistically insignificant. It can be concluded that it is important to perform similar further studies to be focused on higher water scarcity.
