Surface smoothness on processed materials is one of the major characteristics of quality in wood processing industry. The quality of surface varies depending on a variety of parameters such as anatomic and physical features of the material, humidity, density, and machinery and blade characteristics. The present study investigated the optimal level of processing factors pertaining the surface quality of Turkish Red Pine timber. Taguchi experiment design was utilized in order to execute the purpose of the study. More specifically, number of blades, depth of cutting, cutting angle, feed speed were specified as processing factors. A number of experiments were undertaken measuring roughness values (Ra) of the abovementioned factors by using needle head equipment for surface roughness. The findings were analyzed by using statistical package programs. The reliability factor was found to be 95 % and was confirmed through variance analysis. Radial and tangent surfaces were regarded as noise factor. The optimum value of surface roughness was obtained by using four-blade planning ball with 0.5 mm cutting depth, 460 cutting angle and 15 m/min feed speed. In addition, the order of factors affecting surface smoothness was found to be ?feed speed > ?number of blade > ?cutting depth > ?cutting angle. The obtained values from the factors influencing the surface roughness were presented in tables and graphics and were interpreted in light of related literature.
