Determination of growing degree days of maize varieties with different maturity periods according to sowing dates under Afyonkarahisar conditions
2013
Utkugun, K.
The research was carried out with aim to determine the effects of different sowing dates (20th April, 1st May, 10th May, 20th May and 1st June 2011) on grain yield, some yield-related traits and growing degree-days (GDD) of some dent corn cultivars (Bora, Prestij and Hido) under Afyonkarahisar ecological conditions in 2011 vegetation season. The experiment was set up according to a Randomized Complete Block Design in a split-plot arrangement with three replicates, where sowing dates were in the main plots while the maize cultivars were in subplots split within the main plots. Of the sowing dates, the highest grain yield was obtained from 10th May swing date (993.6 kg da-1). The grain yield and ear characteristics of the cultivar were arranged Bora, Prestij and Hido with decreasing order. In plant and stem diameter were arranged as Hido, Prestij and Bora with decreasing order. The effects of the sowing dates x the maize cultivars interactions on grain yield and some yield-related traits of dent corn were statistically significant. The highest grain yield (1080.7 kg da-1) was determined from the Bora cultivar on sown 10th May. The lowest grain yield (631.9 kg da-1) and its components were obtained from the Hido cultivar on 20th April, the earliest sowing date.Total growing degree-days accumulated as harvest period of dent corn in different sowing dates occurred between 919.4 0C (Prestij cultivar sown on 20th May) - 1355.9 0C (Hido cultivar sown on 10th May) under Afyonkarahisar ecological conditions.
