Apples have a decisive share in the total domestic fruit production. Geographical origin is often related to the production method and fruit quality. The deliberate misleading of consumers, such as insufficient or incorrect labelling of the country of origin, aims to make products more attractive. Apples, as the most important domestic fruit commodity, have the greatest risk of damages related to false statement of geographical origin. Based on the market research, apple cultivars for which there may be insufficient or incorrect labelling of the country of origin have been evaluated. The standard apple classifier introduced at VŠÚO was used for evaluation of vegetative and fruit characters. In the evaluated period, the highest average weight of the fruit had cultivar ´Melrose´ (228 g). Then ´Jonagold´ (195 g) followed. On the other hand, the lowest weight of fruits was recorded in cultivars ´Gala´ (144 g) and ´Topaz´ (148 g). In terms of overall taste, ´Jonagold´ and ´Melrose´ cultivars were best evaluated. The taste quality of the fruit and its nutritional properties are, together with the attractiveness of the appearance, decisive for the consumer‘s preferences of choice. In the evaluated period, the highest sugar content according to refraction (21.3 °Brix) was achieved with cultivar ´Gala´. The most firm fruits according to the penetration showed cultivars ´Melrose´ (6.87) and ´Braeburn´ (6.68). The firmness of the flesh is important for market applications in the handling and transport of fruits.
