It is well known that annual shoots of apple trees grow rapidly, especially after intensive crown formation. For a number of apple cultivars suitable for commercial cultivation, fruit buds are mainly on the periphery of the branches, which adversely affect the formation of the yield. In such a situation a plant growth regulator would reduce shoot growth and allow fruit buds to develop evenly throughout a shoot. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of the plant growth regulator Regalis Plus on the yield of apples and shoot growth. The trial was conducted in Latvia from 2018 to 2020 in five apple plantations using two variants: untreated and Regalis Plus. Treatments with Regalis Plus were applied once or twice during the growing season as follows: the first treatment at the end of the full flower and the second treatment after 3–5 weeks depending on the plantation. Ten apple trees of each variant were selected for assessment of the shoot growth. During the harvest, five randomly selected apple trees were harvested in each variant, standard and non-standard apples were sorted, and the number and weight of apples for each category were recorded. The statistical analysis of the data using ANOVA and Bonferroni test was performed. The treatment with Regalis Plus significantly reduced shoot length in most cases compared to the control and it could be concluded that the use of Regalis Plus in Latvian orchards has the potential to reduce the amount of labour required for crown formation. The study showed a positive effect of Regalis Plus on the proportion of standard fruits in the yield, but no significant differences were found between the variants.
