Are there more arthropods on the bark of old oaks than young oaks? | Finnes det flere leddyr i barken av gamle enn unge eiketrær?

Store gamle eiketrær (Quercus spp.) er i nedgang over hele verden. Dette er lite gunstig da gamle eiker har et rikt antall mikrohabitater som er viktig for mange sjeldne og truede arter. Mikrohabitater i barken er mindre studert enn de i hulrom og vedmold, spesielt på unge eiker. Målet med denne studien var å se på likheter og ulikheter mellom antall leddyr (Arthropoda) og antall taxa på barken av gamle og unge eiker, samt om ulike miljøvariabler kunne være med å forklare forskjellene. Feltarbeidet ble utført sommeren 2018 i Vestfold og Telemark ved bruk av en InsectaZooka Field Aspirator («støvsuger») som jeg brukte til å samle inn leddyr på barken av 20 unge og 20 gamle eiketrær i tre perioder. Det ble gjort tre ulike innsamlinger hvorav den første fokuserte på antall individer og antall taxa på de nederste to meterne av trærne (stammearealet), mens de to andre fokuserte på antall individer og antall taxa på et gitt areal av bark, henholdsvis 1600 cm² og 2500 cm². Antall individer og antall taxa var større på gamle enn på unge eiker når stammearealet ble sammenlignet. Derimot var det ingen statistisk signifikant forskjell mellom antall individer og antall taxa per areal bark mellom unge og gamle eiker, men likevel en tendens i retning av flere taxa og individer på unge eiker enn gamle eiker. Det var tre ordener av leddyr som var overrepresentert både på stammearealet og per areal bark. Det var ordenen tovinger (Diptera), edderkopper (Araneae) og årevinger (Hymenoptera), som utgjorde henholdsvis 22, 19 og 12 % av individene innsamla på stammearealet, og 38, 11 og 11 % av individene samla inn per areal bark. Antall innsamla leddyr og taxa var negativt påvirket av vindstyrke under innsamling. Det var også en tendens til at antall individer gikk ned med økende dekningsgrad av mose og lav på stammen. Videre studier er viktige for å bekrefte disse resultatene. Det kan være fordelaktig å inkludere spretthaler (Collembola) og midder (Acari) i oppfølgende studier, samt å utføre studiene over flere perioder og år. Dette kan gi oss en bedre forståelse for hvilken betydning unge eiker har for tilstedeværelse av barklevende leddyr, og om også de kan huse et rikt antall taxa og individer.

Inglés. Big old oaks (Quercus spp.) are declining all over the world. This is not favourable since old oaks have a high number of microhabitats which are important for many different rare and endangered species. Microhabitats in the bark are less studied compared to for instance cavities and wood mould, especially on young oaks. The aim of this study was to compare the number of individuals and taxa of arthropods (Arthropoda) on old and young oaks and investigate if different environmental variables could help explain any differences in fauna. The fieldwork was conducted in the summer of 2018 in Vestfold and Telemark counties. The arthropods were collected using an InsectaZooka Field Aspirator on the bark of 20 young and 20 old oaks over three periods. Three different types of collection methods were conducted: the first focused on the number of individuals and taxa on the lower two meters of the tree trunk (trunk-area), while the other two focused on the number of individuals and taxa on a given area of bark (1600 and 2500 cm2). The number of individuals and taxa was higher on the old oaks than the young ones when comparing the trunk-area. This was not the case when comparing the area bark, where there was no difference. But still there was a tendency for a higher number of taxa and individuals on the young oaks than the old ones when comparing the area bark. Three orders of arthropods had most of the individuals both on the trunk-area and the per area bark. That were the dipterans (Diptera), spiders (Araneae) and the hymenopterans (Hymenoptera), with respectively 22, 19 and 12 % of the number of individuals on the trunk-area, and 38, 11 and 11 % of the individuals collected on the area bark. Wind had a negative effect on the number of arthropods and taxa collected. There was a tendency that the number of individuals decreased with increasing cover of moss and lichens on the tree trunk. More studies are necessary to confirm my results. It could be useful to include springtails (Collembola) and mites (Acari) in later studies and conduct the studies over a longer period or several years. This can give us a better understanding on the importance of young oaks on the presence of arthropods on the trunk, and if young oaks can maintain a high number of taxa and individuals.
