The autochthonous Domestic mountain horses and Balkan donkeys are now mostly kept in the semi-free roaming system on the mountain pastures on Stara Planina and not used for any work. They are not covered by any prevention, with the exception of occasional dehelmintisation. Clinical observation of several herds of domestic mountain horses and donkeys over the past ten years did not detect clear symptoms of more serious diseases, with the exception of skin changes, mainly traumatic origin and small BCS, in many horses in all herds, regardless of grazing quality. A high degree of infection with endo parasites (Trichostrongylus axei, Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus edentatus, Parascaris equorum, Dictyocaulus arnfieldi, Strongyloides westeri) was found by parasitological examination in all horses and donkeys. Haematological examination revealed that most horses, especially those with smaller BCS, had mild anemia, often with leukocytosis. The PCR method confirmed the presence of Babesia cabali and Theileria equi in most horses, most likely indicating an endemic condition, since neither Babesia cabali nor Theileria equi wasconfirmed in blood smears. Biochemical screening of blood sera in most horses in poor and in some in good condition has shown an increase in serum liver enzyme activity, which is most likely attributable to poisoning of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, due to the presence of Senecio jacobea plants in pastures.
