Artificial planting of Shorea ovalis has never been reported. One of the major constraints is associated with the availability of seeds. The species is an erratic seed bearer and the seeds are recalcitrant in nature and can only be stored for a relatively short period. The present study showed that S ovalis could be successfully maintained for 12 months as slow-growing (sail seedlings in shade houses in the nursery under 20% relative light intensity (RLI).These seedlings were grown in compost and cocopeat media at high density of 300 seedlings/m². The recovery of the stored seedlings to normal growth phase prior to field planting is also reported in this paper.
