Taxonomic notes on fishes of the Lower Kinabatangan–Segama Wetlands, Ramsar Site

A survey of coastal marine and estuarine fishes and their abundance was carried out during the Lower Kinabatangan – Segama Wetlands (LKSW) Scientific Expedition in June 2014. The survey concentrated in the Kulamba Bay area, a coastal lagoon in the southern part of the Kinabatangan River catchment. Fishes were collected from six localities using various fishing gears, namely gillnet, cast net, longline and hand line. Water depth and hydrological parameters (pH, DO, salinity, TDS, current speed, water temperature) were recorded for each locality and are presented herein. A total of 56 species comprising 45 genera, 28 families in 9 orders were recorded. Almost all the coastal marine and estuarine fish species recorded from Kulamba Bay occur elsewhere within the State of Sabah. The most abundant (Category 5 of the log3 abundance category) fish families are Ariidae and Plotosidae (catfishes/ikan duri), Engraulidae (thryssa/kasai), Gobiidae (gobies/belodok), Mugilidae (mullets/belanak) and Sciaenidae (croakers/gelama), whereas a few other families are represented by just a single specimen (Category 1, log₃ abundance).
