Spreading awareness and knowledge on wetlands and Sabah’s Ramsar site is an important tool in conserving the area. Environmental educators at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) has designed an Environmental Education Programme for Ramsar based on the background of the stakeholders and the pertinent issues involving them. Several EE activities were organized, involving the local communities, such as EERace (an environmental education course for teachers), Tanak Wetlands Camp for children and Ramsar CEPA training for community leaders. Each activity was designed differently by considering the suitability of the target group of participants. The main objective of this project is to give the opportunities to the local communities to gain knowledge on how to maintain their livelihoods with wise-use of natural resources. Experienced-based learning method was used to raise the awareness of local communities on the importance of sustainable use of resources for the long-term conservation of the wetlands they depend on for their livelihood. In addition, the element of fun injected into each and every activity conducted by RDC have led to the creation of a closer rapport between RDC and local communities. This close rapport between the local communities and SFD (RDC and the Kinabatangan District Forestry Office) is crucial in working towards sustainable conservation of the LKSW.
