Reconnaissance land resources survey of priority strips for integrated rural development [Samar Island]: soil and land resources appraisal and training project [Philippines]

A land resources survey of seven priority strips (Road Survey Areas A to G) with a total of 470,000 hectares, was conducted in 1977 by the Government Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The objective was to aid investment-oriented, integrated rural development planning in Samar Island. Land systems were identified and mapped within each of the priority strips during the survey. Suitabilities for various crops and cropping systems were then evaluated for each land system, based on such environmental parameters as climate, soils and topography, and the socio-economic framework within the region. Quantitative estimates for rice, coconut, and abaca production (present and potential) were derived for each land system and then redistributed geographically by Road Survey Area in order to estimate the total future production of these three crops under with and without road conditions. Study results show that future agricultural production within the survey area could be raised substantially with the development of the proposed road network.
