The research and training capabilities of IITA (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture) are critical resources for the agricultural development of the humid and sub-humid tropics. Considering the severe shortage of trained manpower is virtually all African countries, the Institute believes this program has already made a significant contribution towards the development of the continent. Through cooperative contacts and agreements with various nations, scientific organizations and universities, a number of them in Africa, the Institute has helped strengthen national research capabilities and has also tested a wide variety of crop lines under different ecological conditions
