Refinement of a regenerating stand of the Parashorea tomentella/Eusideroxylon zwageri type of lowland dipterocarp forest in Sabah - a problem in silvicultural management

Management of regenerating stands involves decisions on treatment to improve the economic component of the crop. A refinement of 11-year old regeneration is described which contrasts two levels of treatment against a control. Treatment stimulates growth rates of pole-sized dipterocarps, allowing them to grow more vigorously for several years after intervention. Larger established trees show indifferent responses to treatment. Refinement is seen as a useful option in increasing the numbers of vigorous trees in the stand. A number of generalisations are enunciated regarding the most appropriate time of intervention and the manner in which refinement should be undertaken. The use of blanket prescriptions is not recommended and silvicultural skills must be increasingly employed in the forest if management is to realise the potential gains in productivity of which the forest is capable
